MLK DAY 2020

In observance of MLK Day ,on Sunday January 19th, 2020, Sanskriti School organized its largest service project to date at the Community Center in Livingston.  This service project was a true collaboration between multiple groups.  The Sanskriti School community worked with teen volunteers from the Livingston High School Key Club and teen volunteers from the Livingston community to create blankets for Project Linus. Project Linus is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets.  They donate an average of 350 blankets per year.  These blankets are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters and social service agencies.

Close to 100 volunteers came together to tassel 80 fleece blankets.  This service project was spearheaded by Rahul Nambiar, a freshman at the Livingston High School and a Key Club member, along with the Community Service team at Sanskriti School.  Volunteers first heard a presentation by Rahul about Project Linus and then tasseled blankets and wrote notecards with words of encouragement.   They completed 80 blankets in less than 2 hours.  We are very grateful to the families of Sanskriti School, members of Sanskriti of NJ, Key Club members and all of the volunteers for their time, effort, hard work and generous contributions.

In past years we have done various community service events to mark Gandhi Jayanthi that have included neighborhood clean-ups, making food kits and toiletry kits for the homeless, assembling school supply bags for an orphanage in India and making cards for our troops.

In light of the unfortunate aftermath of the Kerala floods, we came together to do a fundraiser to raise money for Kerala disaster relief through the Global Giving Foundation. It was wonderful to see the overwhelming response in attendance, contributions to the bake sale and donations to our fundraiser.  We raised over $800 just in donations and bake sale collections. The fundraiser was then opened up to the larger Sanskriti community and we collected an additional $800 dollars.

In August, 2018 at India Fest, Sanskriti School sold water, popcorn and Indian drinks to collect money for Bridges in Summit, NJ, a homeless shelter.

In April 2018, Sanskriti of NJ participated in Livingston's 2nd Annual Community Clean-Up Day at the Community Center, Hillside Ave, Livingston, NJ. Dozens of parents and children cleaned the area near the community center finding not just plastic and glass bottles but also tires and even a large plastic bathtub!

In January, 2018, to honor Martin Luther King day, we partnered with Bridges in Summit, NJ to prepare sustainable brown bag lunches for homeless individuals in the Newark area. Students at Sanskriti school were shown a powerpoint on the plight of the homeless in New Jersey so as to get a better understanding of their life and experiences.

We also thank our enthusiastic teachers, parents and volunteers who continue to create an environment for our children to learn, participate in and appreciate the importance of community service.
